Ravi,
I saw this on TED and sent it to my children who are all adults now. I couldn't and they couldn't agree with you more.
Hope all is well.

Hi, David. To me, transformational or visionary leadership is what we've talked about for a few decades now, where the leader has a clear vision and gets everyone excited about this. As a friend of mine says, the leader has 'seen the promised land' and shows people the way. The challenge is that it is still his/her vision, not the vision of everyone else. A co-creative leader acknowedges that the world is far too complex for one person to have a clear vision, and (s)he only has part of the puzzle. The co-creative leader's job is to engage all the other players to co-create the vision so they ALL jointly own it. It's not his/her vision that he 'sells' to someone else - it's the vision of the collective, and so owned by everyone.

My experience is that when tough times come, people are more likely to lose energy for a transformational leader's vision than for one they've helped to co-create.

Does this make sense?
